In simple terms, PTCB is a board that certifies the pharmacy technicians. PTCB conducts exams for the technicians every year; this exam is conducted twice in a year. Board has also issued the PTCB study material for the students to help them in preparation. It also conducts the practice test to familiarize the students with the paper's pattern. The practice exam result cannot be taken as a result for actual test. The actual test result is quite different from the practice test result.

Those, who want to become pharmacy technician, should go through the PTCB exam. To prepare for the pharmacy technician certification exam, candidate has to take PTCB study material. PTCB exam have 80 questions and 10 questions in addition which are not counted in the scoring of result. The additional 10 questions are used for future test purpose. The duration for examination is 2 hours. Candidates are advised to answer all the questions as their final score is based on the total number of correct answers. The additional 10 questions are pre test questions, which are used to design the future exam papers. To study for PTCB exam, a student can also go for e-books and online assistance. Many institutes and colleges are providing online training for the preparation of such exams.

Many states does not require PTCB certification, but students are suggested to go for this examination as many pharmacists, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies appoint only those candidates, who have proper training and certification. A candidate must not get dishearten if he/she does not clear the exam in first attempt as he/she can appear for the exam again with more preparation. PTCB certificate has to be re- certified after every two years; a physician can get his/her re-certificate by going under a 20 hours practical training.
